Text messages are converted to an email and sent to your email inbox. You reply to the email to text back.

The outside message initiator has a fully threaded text message conversation. This is a fancy way to say that their end of the conversation is like any text message between cell phones.

Your end of the conversation is a series of related emails.

Your cannot initiate a new text message. You would need our text to email + web or text  to smart phone app.
